History & Contributions
In 2007 we were told by Dressage QLD, that if we wanted money put back into the sport, we needed a fundraiser to do so. Then the idea came to Nicole Tough (a well known QLD dressage competitor, coach and judge) in a dream, to run a one day mini "Equitana" just for dressage, utilising the knowledge and experience of the QLD State Dressage Squad.
Nicole then took the idea to the 2007 QLD State Dressage Squad and Squad Co-ordinator, and every member put their hand up to either take on an organising position or to be be involved.
Bringing in a few key professionals, including Keran Ainslie with a background in Sponsorship and Marketing, Leasa Stephen with a background as the Equitana Volunteers Co-ordinator, and Carole Lok with her expertise in financial matters, we undertook to bring the dream to life. Many volunteers joined this crew including Rosie and Alyssa Webb - our VIP catering duo, and Tony Caetano - our technical wizard. Certainly we couldn't put this event together without volunteers. They really are the heart of the sport.
That first year we held the Festival at the beautiful Pine Lodge Equestrian Park. We had 32 Trade Sites in our “Trade Village”, we ran a “Festival Trail” for kids, and had the 2007 QLD State Squad either presenting, demonstrating or displaying in the main arena or seminar centre. We stood at the ticket gate that morning and were terrified nobody would come!
That first year, we had 800 people through the gate and made $11,000. We couldn't believe it! It really is true - “If you build it, they will come”.
Each year it is the spectators that inspire us to give up our time to keep the event growing bigger and better than the year before. Outgrowing our beautiful venue at Pine Lodge, 2012 saw us move the event to the all new QLD State Equestrian Centre.
The Festival is still managed by an extremely passionate and resourceful volunteer committee and continues to grow in popularity with spectators, vendors and sponsors alike - all vowing to attend and participate from year to year.
The QLD Festival of Dressage is a unique fundraising and educational platform which has proven to raise the awareness and promotion of equestrian sport in QLD.
As a fundraising event to support the ongoing growth of dressage in Queensland, financial achievements have been sizeable and thus, has enabled a series of initiatives which have both raised the profile of dressage and assisted many EQ members and clubs in a number of significant ways.
2018 sees a new vision for the QLD Festival of Dressage - "The Masterclass Series". This new perception of the event is to run a series of Masterclasses, bringing in some of the world's most respected Dressage professionals, for a full day of learning from the best in the business. The core values of the QLD Festival of Dressage won't be forgotten however, with our trademark shopping opportunities and entertainment, still being an integral part of the event.
We hope you enjoy!
